WELCOME FROM OUR PILLAR TEAM!
Our physician leaders and advisors are representing medical staff in key areas of our strategic plan.
Dr. Amin Sajan
Emergency Medicine: “Apart from two stints working abroad, I’ve been at Providence Health Care since the start of my residency in 1995. I’ve worked in the Middle East on two separate occasions: 2 years in Riyadh just after 9/11 and most recently 6 years in Abu Dhabi.”
As an Emergency Physician, I am passionate about the unpredictable and sometimes chaotic environment that puts a premium on collaboration and team work to deliver quality patient care. I am most passionate about optimization of operational efficiency and management of scarce resources.
In this role, I am looking forward to engaging with creative problem solvers within Providence to support an innovation ecosystem that leads to an exportable brand for the organization.
Dr. Darryl Knight
Vice President, Research and Academic Affairs; President, Providence Health Care Research Institute; Professor, Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics
Dr. Knight is a cell biologist with an international reputation in the area of lung and airway remodelling. His research career has focused on understanding how abnormal epithelial cell-fibroblast interactions influence the severity and chronicity of respiratory diseases. To date, he has published over 166 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters.
Dr. Knight has a strong track record of obtaining research grant funding. He is regularly invited to present his work and chair sessions at major national and international meetings.
Dr. Lik Hang Lee
As a pathologist, I enjoy problem solving and working collaboratively with others. I enjoy teaching trainees and contributing to the knowledge base in pathology and medicine through research. Even though I’m not at the front line seeing the patients, I enjoy knowing that I make important contributions to their care.
In my role as a physician advisor, I am eager to provide input into the organizational direction of our medical community through my own experiences, and importantly through the voice of our broader medical staff community.
Dr. Jeanne Macleod
I enjoy the camaraderie of our amazing team of physicians, nurses and allied health care workers in the ED. I admire how we can work together in a crowded, chaotic environment and provide calm, compassionate care to our patients. The Emergency Department interfaces with so many other disciplines and I find it so rewarding when we come together to provide great care for patients.
I feel passionate about teaching and using medical simulation to improve team based training.
What do I hope we accomplish in the pillar of Discover, learn and Innovate?
My goal would be to create a community of all our great educators at Providence Health where we could come together and share ideas on how best to teach learners and multidisciplinary teams. My special interest is in using medical simulation for learning.
Dr. Peter Van den Elzen
Hematopathologist at St. Paul’s Hospital and Immunologist at UBC and BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute. I’ve always tried to bridge the gap between science and medicine, doing both basic research and clinical practice since coming to Vancouver 13 years ago.
I am passionate about…
Research and discovery: especially the role of the immune system in disease, including everything from cancer immunotherapy, the microbiome to autoimmunity.
Innovation and technological progress: from novel technologies in blood tests to digital medicine and artificial intelligence as applied to diagnostics and data analysis.
Teaching and learning: helping create a stimulating environment for students and trainees.
In this role, I’m looking forward to helping to stoke the enthusiasm towards the new St. Paul’s. Creating opportunities for collaborative interaction between medical staff and researchers, and between the Providence health care doctors and scientists with entrepreneurial and industrial interests. I’m looking forward to working with Dr. Sajan and the Innovation team and carrying out our shared vision of promoting creativity, innovation, discovery and learning.
