Send your proposal for any idea or project that supports the testing and assessment of promising innovations in a clinical setting.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) is making an open call for applications to the Innovation Pathway Program. Please read the program details below as there have been several significant updates for the coming year.
Program details:
Funding available: $1,000,000 for 2024-2025 (approximately $500,000 per intake for all health authorities; no upper limit per innovation proposal)
Application deadlines:
Regardless of the intake date, funds must be used by March 31, 2025. The funding transfer dates are approximate.
Program objective:
The Ministry is seeking innovations that address an existing gap or problem, benefit the system, have scientific merit, are aligned to health system priorities, and have potential for broad system impact.
* Priorities: access to primary care, seniors care, mental health and addictions care, cancer care, ambulance services, surgical and diagnostic services, hospital services, health sector workforce, and digital health care services
* Project must have a Clinical Champion, an Executive Sponsor (SLT level) and state key performance indicators/measures (details in Program Guide)
* This program is open province-wide. Each health authority can submit up to five (5) projects for funding consideration
Funding uses:
* Funding can be used for labour, materials, equipment, software/database, subcontractors for direct project work or evaluation
* Projects can have funding from multiple sources

How to apply: January 19, 2024 intake:
1. Review the Innovation Pathway Program Guide. This includes detailed information including a Decision Support Tool which helps consider the fit of proposals for the program.
2. Review PHC’s internal prioritization matrix; this is in alignment with the Ministry of Health’s priorities and Fit Against Criteria Matrix found within the Program Guide.
3. Confirm your PHC executive sponsor (SLT-level).
4. Complete the Health Innovation Intake Form (link found within the Program Guide). Do NOT submit – instead, save a PDF copy and send it to PHC’s innovation contact: Holly van Heukelom, Senior Manager, Ideas: Forward, hvanheukelom@providencehealth.bc.ca | 604-874-2804. Note that all applications directly submitted to the Ministry of Health will be redirected to Holly.
5. Reach out to Holly at any point during the application process. She can walk you through the process, discuss your idea or project, provide feedback and answer any questions you might have.
6. All intake forms must be submitted to Holly by January 19, 2024. All applications will then be reviewed and compared against PHC’s internal prioritization matrix by PHC’s innovation team, the Innovarium. Holly will reach out to all applicants by January 31, 2024. The top 5 applicants might be asked to make some revisions to their applications and to submit their final intake forms by February 5, 2024.
7. Once the Ministry of Health has selected the PHC innovation proposals (by March 8, 2024), Holly will contact all of the unsuccessful applicants to discuss alternative funding streams and opportunities that might be a good fit.
