Financial Management Event Series Summary

In late February, PASS presented a Financial Management Series, hosted by Dr. Moira Stillwell and featured presenters Fiona Dalton and Brian Simmers. Dr. Caroline Marshall, Consultant Anaesthetist & former COO of the National Health Service in the UK was also a guest during this three part series.

The series explored physician leadership opportunities and strategies to influence PHC’s budget for optimal patient care. Sessions included:

 

PART 1: How does PHC Budget for Patient Care? Budget Primer Pre-workshop

The budget skills building pre-workshop was co-designed as the first component of a a 3-part interactive series to inspire and facilitate advanced learning about the importance of financial stewardship in healthcare.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the budget ecosystem & BC’s healthcare budget process: fixed budgets, annual cycle, funding flow.
  • Interpret PHC’s corporate budget and PHC’s program-level budgets.
  • Explore financial sustainability (saving dollars by reducing waste).
  • Explore ways to innovate within the existing budget system.

PART 2: From Anaesthetist to Chief Operating Officer: How and Why? with Dr. Marshall- Physician Leadership Dinner Presentation and Social

The Distinguished Speaker Dinner Session From Anaesthetist to Chief Operating Officer: How and Why? featuring Dr. Caroline Marshall was created to inspire and facilitate advanced learning about the importance of financial stewardship in healthcare. After several years as a clinician, Dr. Marshall served as the COO of University Hospital Southampton (UK) for nearly 6 years.

The dinner event was designed to explore:

  • Dr. Marshall’s personal perspective on physician leadership;
  • Attributes, skills and knowledge obtained and leveraged by Dr. Marshall and
  • how she acquired expertise in financial management;
  • The importance of relationships with Administrative colleagues and how Dr.
  • Marshall developed these trusted connections.

The Financial Management Skills Building Workshop was created as the final component of a 3-part interactive series to inspire and facilitate advanced learning about the importance of financial stewardship in healthcare.

Workshop Learning Objectives:

  • Explore strategic financial management
  • Review PHC Budgets in context
  • Define value and waste in context
  • Assess and solve physician-driven cases
  • Develop personal action plans to affect change
