SUMMARY:CST Evaluation Interviews
DESCRIPTION:The CST Evaluation team will be conducting 10 – 15 minute interviews with providers on Wednesday\, October 16  from 9am – 4pm at the Physician’s Lounge in St. Paul’s Hospital. \nThe purpose of the CST Evaluation is to answer the questions “To what extent is the CST Project achieving its goals? And why or why not?” The findings from the CST Evaluation will be used to provide information about what is working well and what is not\, and what improvements will be required as the implementation rolls out. It is also to demonstrate accountability by providing an overall assessment of the effects of having implemented the CST Project. Interviews will cover topics related to the CST “key performance indicators”\, including medication ordering and charting/documentation. Collecting baseline information on these processes will enable a pre/post comparison and help us to understand how the CST Project affects your work. If you have any questions\, please email CSTEvaluation@vch.ca. \n

SUMMARY:Quality Forum Call for Abstracts - Deadline
DESCRIPTION:The Quality Forum is an annual event that provides opportunities to share and learn about improvements to the quality of health care. Over 1\,200 people are expected to attend Quality Forum 2020 – here’s your chance to tell them about your work! \nYou can choose to deliver a rapid fire presentation and/or display a storyboard on any topic related to providing better care for patients. \nThe deadline for submissions is Friday\, September 6\, 2019. \nOrganized by the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council\, this year’s Quality Forum takes place February 25 – 27\, 2020 at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver. Participants represent the entire spectrum of care – from physicians\, pharmacists and nurses to quality improvement professionals\, executives\, administrators\, students and patients. \nDepending on the stage of your work\, you can submit an abstract under one of two categories: \nOutcomes Outcomes are projects underway or complete with demonstrated results and lessons that can be shared. Projects do not have to be considered successful – failures provide valuable learning opportunities! \nIdeas Ideas describe original thinking\, promising practices or emerging ways of how to improve care that are too young to have results. You can seek input\, inspire collaboration and spark action at an early stage. \nVisit QualityForum.ca to learn more about submitting an abstract\, including scoring and selection criteria as well as details about the rapid fire presentation and storyboard formats. You can submit as many abstracts as you like\, and each one is limited to 300 words. Contact QualityForum@bcpsqc.ca or 604.668.8254 if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:2019 Leadership Courses (2 courses available July)
DESCRIPTION:LEADING AT PROVIDENCE Workshops (ALL WITH SEATS AVAILABLE) \n\nTeamwork & Collaboration July 10\nDeveloping Others July 10\n\n  \nCourse Descriptions & Details Below \n To register\, please contact Perminder Sihota \nThe ‘Leading at Providence’ Program continues (aimed at: \n\nemerging/new leaders in front line supervisory roles;\nthose aspiring to be leaders\, who are supported by their supervisor/manager;\nleaders with two to five years’ experience &/or those who are new to operational leadership roles at PHC)\n\n Core Pathway: Leading for Improvement  \nDate: June 5\, 2019 \nTime and Location: 0830-1230\, Coquihalla Room\, 2nd floor\, 1190 Hornby St. \nFocusing on quality improvement in healthcare requires us to think differently about leadership. This module explores continuous quality improvement (QI) at PHC and offers leaders practical approaches\, resources\, and networking opportunities to enable QI in their areas. \nAt the conclusion of this module\, participants will be able to: \n\nDefine healthcare quality and QI as a continuous process\nDescribe the role of a leader in facilitating continuous QI\nIdentify resources and employ strategies to enable QI in their areas\n\n\n \nCore Pathway: Fundamentals of System Thinking  \nDate:  June 13\, 2019 \nTime and Location: 0830-1230\, Coquihalla Room\, 2nd floor\, 1190 Hornby St. \nThis module contains two main topic areas: a) system terms and types\, and b) types of workplace change and the relationship to transitions. In the first part of this session\, through brief content inputs and experiential activities\, participants will explore and apply basic systems thinking terminology\, identify five basic types of systems\, and examine work activities through a set of system lenses designed to bring clarity to transformation conversations. The second part of the session is designed to take system concepts to the next level by discussing and applying basic types of change – developmental\, transitional\, and transformational; the various criteria for determining each type; and how leadership strategies for managing transitions differ according to the type of change. The module will conclude with participants applying their learning to real-time workplace changes they face. \nAt the conclusion of this module\, participants will be able to: \n\n Identify the five kinds of systems thinking and the basic concept of collaborative leadership\nExamine the components/methodologies in a change process and the ways to lead others through change\n Identify the dynamics of change and the practical and emotional impact they have on people\, work environments\, and organizational goals\n Apply critical thinking models at the organizational (vs. clinical) level\n\n\n \nCore Pathway: Change Fundamentals  \nDate:  June 13\, 2019 \nTime and Location: 1300-1630\, Coquihalla Room\, 2nd floor\, 1190 Hornby St. \nThis module contains three related topics: a) change b) change management and c) change leadership. In the first part of this session\, through brief content inputs and experiential activities\, participants will explore and apply the nature of change and change terminology. The second part will explore the concepts of change management and how to do change. The last section will differentiate change management from change leadership and explore some of the myths surrounding change. Throughout the module participants will apply their learning to the real-time workplace changes they face. We will conclude with a reflection on your personal change strategy\, exploring resilience\, courage and barriers. \nAt the end of this module participants will be able to: \n\nDefine and differentiate between change\, change management and change leadership\n Examine the components/methodologies in a change process and the ways to lead others through change\n Identify the dynamics of change and the practical and emotional impact they have on people\, work environments\, and organizational goals\nHave a greater understanding of your personal experience of change and develop strategies to help you cope with change\n\n\n \nCore Pathway: Introduction to Leadership  \nDate: June 19\, 2019 \nTime and Location: 0830-1230\, Coquihalla Room\, 2nd floor\, 1190 Hornby St. \nIt’s a big move from being an individual contributor where you are responsible for your own work to a position such as supervisor or manager where you are responsible for a broader scope of work that is accomplished with and through others. Sometimes the move to management is made because you’ve been recognized as capable in your role as an individual and you have the ability to work well with others. Other times the move to management comes as part of a personal career plan. Either way\, working in a formal leadership role requires new ways of thinking and acting with others. \nThe aim of this module is to explore the similarities and differences between leadership and management and to support you in developing habits of learning from your experience that will help you improve your practice as a leader and manager. \nAt the conclusion of this module\, participants will be able to: \n\nIntegrate the knowledge and skills required to be a leader with the responsibilities of a manager.\nDemonstrate critical reflection on one’s own practice of leadership.\nUse a personal learning plan as a tool to reinforce the concepts of continuous learning and continuous improvement and development.\n\n \nCore Pathway: Personlity Styles \n\nDate: June 19 \nTime and Location: 1300-1630\, Coquihalla Room\, 2nd floor\, 1190 Hornby St. \nThis module examines the important role personality styles\, or psychological preferences\, play in personal leadership development (the Lead Self domain of the LEADS framework). A self-assessment personality tool will be required for this module\, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®). Personality styles have been shown to impact a wide range of leadership behaviours\, including: decision-making\, problem solving\, stress tolerance\, communication\, and team dynamics. The first half of the module focuses on identifying the role perceptions play in creating assumptions and their relationship to personality type. \nThe second part of the module debriefs the participant’s self-assessment personality profile\, linking the results to their decision-making\, problem-solving and communication styles with the goal of creating greater adaptability for the new manager. \nAt the conclusion of Personality Styles\, participants will be able to: \n\nGain awareness of how personality style impacts personal perceptions and how one constructs assumptions;\nAssess individual behavioural preferences and how those preferences impact who you are as a leader (e.g.\, MBTI®);\nIdentify areas of strength and development and use this knowledge to construct a personal development plan\, and also as a lever to maximize performance; and\nDemonstrate greater awareness of individual approaches to leadership.\n\n\n \nCore Pathway: Teamwork and Collaboration  \nDate: July 10\, 2019 \nTime and Location: 0830-1230\, Central Presbyterian Church\, 1155 Thurlow Street\, Multi-Purpose Room \nThis module addresses team collaboration in service to patients\, either directly\, or serving internal functions or public-facing functions in non-clinical settings. The biggest customer service issue a new manager faces is how different programs/-departments handle a particular patient. This module introduces several strategies for enhancing cross-functional team collaboration. Four strategic approaches are presented: (1) optimizing member composition; (2) maximizing collaboration; (3) understanding team role balance; and (4) determining the organizational context. \nAt the conclusion of this module\, participants will be able to: \n\nDefine and identify the characteristics of cross-functional teams (CFT’s)\nUse the integrated team effectiveness model (ITEM) to identify areas for team improvement\nIdentify and employ strategies for improving team collaboration\nDescribe and implement concepts related to team balance\nIdentify issues teams are able to address\, and those that require leadership advocacy in the organizational context\n\n\n \nCore Pathway: Developing Others  \nDate: July 10\, 2019 \nTime and Location: 1300-1630\, Central Presbyterian Church\, 1155 Thurlow Street\, Multi-Purpose Room \nThis module complements the module Healthy Work Environment and its discussions on creating a healthy workplace culture. In this module the focus is on learning. We begin with a discussion of learning in the workplace and working with different generations of employees. The first part of this module enhances the leader’s awareness of ways to foster learning – of both individuals and teams – in the workplace. \nThe second topic is a more specific look at giving learning oriented feedback and builds on the transactional competencies of performance management that are covered in the Management Track workshops. \nAt the conclusion of Developing Others\, participants will be able to: \n\nUse team processes and dynamics to foster and sustain a healthy workplace focused on learning\nUnderstand different generational values in the workplace and their implications for learning\nDemonstrate skills of open\, honest\, respectful\, learning oriented feedback\nFoster a workplace culture where contributions are recognized and valued\n\n \n\n“Confident\, capable leadership in everyone”

During my residency\, I took a year away to work as a GP/anesthetist in Yellowknife\, NT. After completing my residency\, I completed a cardiac anesthesia fellowship in Toronto and then joined the Department of Anesthesiology at St. Paul’s in 2006. Currently\, I serve as the Head of UBC Cardiac Anesthesia in addition to being the lead for Cardiac Anesthesia at SPH. With these roles\, I have considered it essential to build bridges of communication between various groups in order to reach long term outcomes to which people feel they have contributed. Given the imminent changes of CST coming online as well as the strategic planning for the anticipated re-development\, I hope to represent the importance and scope of the physician perspective. \nDr. Victor Leung\, Infectious Disease & Medical Microbiologist – Nominated by Dr. Darra Murphy \nVictor Leung has worked at PHC since 2011 as an Infectious Diseases consultant and Medical Microbiologist. He established the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program in 2013 and became the Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Control in 2015. From 2014-2017\, he was a member of the Medical Staff Executive Committee. This valuable learning experience provided the opportunity for him to help advance the physician Facility Engagement initiative at PHC. He is currently on the Board of Directors for the PHC Physicians and Surgeons Association. \nHaving experienced the great potential of collaborative influence among diversely talented physicians at PHC\, he would like to continue this work through leadership in the MSA. His goal is to further work on activities and strategies to advocate for the PHC medical staff community. He will focus on issues relevant to all medical staff. \nDr. Sarvee Moosavi\, Gastroenterology – Nominated by Dr. Nora Cummins \nDr Sarvee Moosavi is a PHC gastroenterologist with specialized training in motility and functional GI disorders\, after completing her degree at various universities\, including UBC\, McGill University\, University of Calgary and Cedars- Sinai in LA. She is currently working to set up the GI motility lab in the \nVancouver lower mainland at St. Paul’s hospital that would serve nearly 3 million patients\, as the only motility centre in this area. \nShe has been involved in various teaching opportunities to medical students and residents. She has participated as a faculty presenter in accredited programs\, including the annual BC Gastroenterology forum and the grand rounds on testing modalities in the evaluation of GI motility disorders. She is the only gastroenterologist at MSJ\, providing GI consults\, acute GI bleed support\, diagnostic work up\, and rapid access GI clinic. Given her role in both MSJ and SPH GI programs\, she would be an asset to be involved in further discussions of MSJ as part of Providence. \nDr. Julia Raudzus\, Psychiatry – Nominated by Dr. Jani Laramee \nDr. Julia Raudzus is a psychiatrist and she has been on staff at St. Paul’s Hospital since 2009. Julia has been the medical director of the Provincial Adult Eating Disorder Program since 2010 and the physician lead for the psychiatry consult liaison service since 2016. More recently Julia has also taken on the role of adult division head for the Department of Psychiatry. Julia is a clinical assistant professor with UBC. \nJulia is a graduate of the Sauder Physician Leadership course and she is member of the SPH Governance Subcommittee. Julia has a strong interest in improving health care team communication and she was recently awarded a physician engagement grant to work on this topic. \nDr. Amin Sajan\, Emergency Medicine – Nominated by Dr. Nora Cummins \nI have been a member of the medical staff at Providence Healthcare since graduating from medical school in 1995; first as a resident and then as a staff physician in the Emergency Department. This stretch was broken only by two stints working abroad: once in Saudi Arabia and most recently in the UAE. Having just returned to Vancouver a few months ago\, I have noticed how much more engaged physicians are within our organization and the increasing influence physicians have on strategy undertaken by senior leadership towards fulfilling our shared desired outcomes. In my last role\, I experienced my first exposure to management as the Operations Lead for the Emergency Department. One of our key achievements during this time was to significantly expand the department from 60 to 103 beds and decrease the rate of less than 48 hour admissions by 47%. This new role demanded a skill set that I quickly realized was not within my comfort zone\, prompting a return to the classroom to obtain an MBA. I hope to apply these skills with enthusiasm while pursuing greater involvement within our organization at a time when the culture of physician engagement is so robust. \n \nQuestions: PASS@providencehealth.bc.ca \n  \n
